Walker Williams
Walker Williams, a local composer and alumnus of Berkeley Springs High School, composed a new work, Ozymandias, expressly for the High School Concert Band. The primary objective is to introduce student musicians to irregular and mixed time signatures and to ‘breath tones’, an easily performed technique used in contemporary concert band repertoires.
The orchestration was specifically designed to ‘write around’ the limited instruments of the local Concert Band and to provide doubling or cues in other instruments. This gave student musicians the uncommon opportunity to meet and work with the composer of a piece they are currently playing while the composer made fine tuning adjustments to the piece during the rehearsal process. The world premiere occurred at a concert on May 5th, 2019.
