Battle of the Books – Charity Brinegar
2018 Mini-Grant Recipient
Each Pleasant View classroom read 16 diverse books published in 2018 and regarded as a possible Caldecott Awardee. Students across K-5 grade levels had a school-wide Battle of the Books in which student votes narrowed the books to the top 8, final 4, and 2 finalists which led to the winner.
Each classroom had a set of books for their classroom library for students to checkout, take home, read, and discuss with their family. Having good books with diverse characters in the hands of all classmates helped students assess and discuss Narrative Elements, Genre, Diversity, and Empathy,
